36 detained after unrest in Ukrainian capital

Kiev UkraineA total of 36 people were detained in Kiev after police were attacked by a group of unidentified men near Ukraine’s parliament building on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the press service of the country’s interior ministry, the crowd broke through a police cordon to reach the parliament building, attacking police officers with sticks, fireworks and smoke bombs.

The attackers also threw stones at the building, smashing windows of the second and the third floors.

At least 15 police officers injured during the clashes were hospitalized for closed craniocerebral traumas, bruises and burns, the country’s Interior Minister Arsen Avakov wrote on his Facebook page.

Although the attackers were waving the flags of the far-right National Patriotic Party and the ultra-nationalist movement, the official representatives of those political groups strictly denied their involvement in the unrest.

Investigation was underway to determine who was behind the attack.
