U.S. House Judiciary Committee to investigate possible obstruction of justice by Trump

The House Judiciary Committee will be investigating President Trump’s possible abuse of power and obstruction of justice, according to the Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Chairman of U.S. House Judiciary Committee. Speaking about the plans of the committee, Congressman Nadler stated that the panel will seek documents from more than 60 individuals and organizations.

During his interview with ABC’s “This Week”, Nadler specified that apart from inquiries to others, the committee also wanted documents from the Department of Justice, the president’s son Donald Trump Jr. and Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg.

“We are going to initiate investigations into abuses of power, into corruption … and into obstruction of justice,” Nadler said. “It’s our job to protect the rule of law.”

“It’s very clear that the president obstructed justice,” Nadler said. However, he also stressed that it was too soon to consider whether impeachment was being pursued.

“Before you impeach somebody, you have to persuade the American public that it ought to happen,” he said.

Nadler cited Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey in May 2017 as an evidence of obstruction of justice. Comey was leading an investigation into Russia’s activities in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion with Trump’s campaign. The former FBI Director later testified before the committee disclosing many details of the conversations he had had with the president, specifically on the issue of Russia investigation. The investigation was subsequently taken over by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, whom Trump has relentlessly criticized, and who is expected to deliver his findings to the U.S. attorney general within weeks.

The committee is set to focus its document requests on actions by Trump that could potentially constitute attempts to remove perceived enemies and opponents, and install more loyal replacements at the Justice Department, according to a person familiar with the matter. President Trump, in turn, consistently denied any connection to Russia, or any misconduct in regards to his opponents. He accused Democrats of a “witch hunt”, instead and claimed it was being done only because “only because I won the Election”.
