Three ways to live a sustainable lifestyle in an urban city

By Jane Sandwood

According to the United Nations, 55% of the world’s population lives in an urban area and is forecasted to grow up to 68% by 2050. The said populace is exposed to problems such as traffic jams, pollution, garbage disposal, and crowding, to name a few. That is why cities all over the world are exerting their efforts to make urban living more sustainable. So, what can you do to improve your way of living? Here are 3 ways to live a sustainable lifestyle in an urban city.

Cleaner methods of travel

Go biking or take a walk when running errands as this can serve as exercise too. According to the Arthritis Foundation, a 30-minute brisk walk can burn 200 calories in one session. But if you don’t have the luxury of time and you want to do more within a day, you can still opt to use a car for long trips. Consider investing in hybrid or electric cars that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. Not to mention, a hybrid vehicle will help save you a ton of cash in the long run.

Choose to reduce, reuse and recycle

One downside to living in the city is the garbage pile up. That is why urban dwellers are encouraged to practice proper garbage disposal and to reduce waste as much as possible. You can purchase products in biodegradable containers as a more eco-friendly option. Segregate your waste and bring non-biodegradable items to the recycling station. Ditch disposable items as much as possible as well.

You can also bring reusable bags when shopping and trade disposable paper cups, plastic spoons and paper plates for reusable items. Also, choose reusable containers when storing food over disposable bags. Not to mention, dry your hands with rewashable towels over paper towels. These subtle changes can make all the difference when it comes to waste management.

Become more energy-efficient

Aside from minimizing fuel use and reducing waste, it can also help to save electricity by removing appliances from power surges when not in use. Turn off the lights during the day and allow natural lights to fill your house. Opt for energy-saving lights and bulbs and use it only when necessary. Also, purchase rechargeable batteries so you don’t have to throw them away after use.

Create some green space

You can turn your vacant wall or a small terrace space to have your own green space. Unleash your gardening ability and make your own green walls or hanging gardens. You can plant ornamental and flowering plants to give your home a fresher glow.  Bug-repelling plants can help drive away bugs and mosquitoes naturally so you can skip the costly and chemically laden insect sprays.

Urban gardening allows you to plant and harvest your own fresh fruits and vegetables for a healthier diet option at a lesser cost. Also, urban gardens can supply you with oxygen while providing a fresh ambiance to your home.

These are just three of the many ways you can make urban living more eco-friendly. Share these tips with your friends and your efforts can make all the difference in living a sustainable way of life, no matter what city you live in.
